Internews funds local media support organizations to provide consultations to journalists and media outlets on legal issues such as copyright law, licensing, state registration, advertising, and defamation, and to defend them in court in case of lawsuits.
Media support organizations are involved in strengthening media related laws to facilitate the development of independent information environment in the Kyrgyz Republic. Media law reformation initiatives and advocacy campaigns are organized in addition to various meetings, round tables, conferences, workshops and researches.
For instance, the efforts of various media support organizations contributed to the formation of the first public service broadcaster OTRK (former National TV and Radio Corporation); the freedom of expression has been guaranteed by constitution; and decriminalization of defamation has been achieved.
Internews continues to support organizations that contribute to the formation, development and maintenance of free, objective and sustainable media in the Kyrgyz Republic.
