Online security in seven steps

From 30 to 31 March 2015, the National Center for Media and Communication held a seminar on web security. The seminar was led by Batyrbek Gaparov, technical director of Internews.

Batyrbek Gaparov told KTRK staff how to secure their use of the Internet.

“The virtual world can be quite dangerous, yet people seem to lower their guard as soon as they go online,” warned Mr. Gaparov.

In order to avoid unfortunate and negative situations on the Internet, Batyrbek Gaparov gave the participants the following recommendations:

Use difficult passwords. All of your accounts (email, social networks, phone, tablets and computers) must have complex passwords which should contain at least 12 symbols.

Personal data. Your contact information, in particular phone number and address, should not be published on open spaces. In no circumstances should you talk about your salary and of where you receive it and keep it. There is no free lunch on the web! Promises of easy money, cheap goods or services on your mail are, as a rule, fraud.

Google the person. Often in the virtual world and especially on social networks, people are not those they pretend to be. Check all information on the person. Before meeting a new acquaintance you must gather at least some information on the person by googling their name. Try not to bring a virtual relationship in the real world too quickly.

Children and Internet. Do not publish photos of children on Internet, it could catch the attention of web users with mental disorders. Information that a child was left alone at home, even in an indirect form, could have severe consequences.

Evaluate information. Any information could be used against you, information on others could damage them. Before publishing information on where you are and with whom, think twice on whether or not this will harm someone.

Learn to value time. The virtual world is time consuming: are you ready to give up your real life for online surfing?
