Position: Assistant Accountant in Kazakhstan/Tajikistan

Location: Almaty/Dushanbe 

Project: Media for Improved Reporting on Environmental and Natural Resources in Central Asia

Accountable to: Project Director

Contract: 14 months fixed term at 100% LOE

Benefits: 500-1000 EUR per month depending on experience

Summary of Role:

The Assistant Accountant will be responsible for day-to-day management of the project-related financial transactions and will ensure all the financial management tasks related to the project ‘Media for Improved Reporting on Environmental and Natural Resources in Central Asia’ are attended to in timely manner. The Assistant Accountant will work under supervision of the Senior Accountant. This role will provide support to the Senior Accountant in all aspects of the financial operations for the project and will require comprehensive working knowledge of Internews financial systems.

Job responsibilities:

  • Providing the Senior Accountant with invoices and information for payment
  • Managing advances received from the Senior Accountant
  • Managing expenditure at the local level
  • Collecting and collating supporting documentation for the expenditure
  • Reporting on transactions to the Senior Accountant
  • Reconciling cash balances locally
  • Other ad hoc requests from senior project staff

Performance Indicators

  • Quality, timeliness and accuracy of reports, including financial reports and petty cash records
  • Good working relations with the staff and partners
  • Initiative and creativity in solving problems
  • Knowledge and understanding of all aspects of position responsibilities
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Efficient and cost-effective use of project resources

 Person specification


4-5 years of experience in a similar role/role with direct relevance to the Assistant Accountant role

Experience of accounting within donor conditions, ideally EC conditions

Experience of working with and reporting to international teams

Experience of working within a similar organisation


An accountancy related qualification Fluency in written and spoken Russian (English is highly desirable but not required)

Ability to work well under pressure

Initiative and creativity in solving problems

Ability to create good working relations with colleagues, partners and donors


Knowledge of donor conditions around procurement and financial management, ideally EC funded international projects
